BioWilliam MacDowell, otherwise known as "Dowie", is a man of simple pleasures.
Born in the seventies in Belfast, Ireland, Dowie grew up in the midst of cultural trauma. Bombs going off and then punishment beatings were things one just got used to when living in the heart of the Orangist neighborhood of Shankhill. However, it seemed the trauma did Dowie well in the end and instead of hiding from it he joined up with the UVF. A twenty-two, he found himself a terrorist in his own country, having been involved in several UVF-related murders, weapons-smuggling, and a number of other crimes. While Dowie is a Protestant, anti-Catholic, anti-Semitic, and a Loyalist, his loyalties don't seem to settle in one place or another. Once he exhuasted his resources in the UK he left not only his country but the entire European Union to go to Brazil and work with a rebel group there. He consequently traveled throughout the world, dealing with heavy artillery and terrorism, an AK-47 on one arm at all times. By the turn of the century he'd left Brazil and gone to Lebanon, Syria, East Africa, Turkmenistan and finally, when the book begins (in the year 2013), Kazakhstan.
He's easily influenced, to a degree, though in the end he's motivated by only a few things; getting along on doing as little as possible, watching some games (football, baseball), drinking some beer (he's Irish, after all) and most importantly, blowing things the fuck up. He's been involved in many assassinations - he likes to kill, and he knows how to do it.
Dowie is as ginger as they come (everywhere), with shiny green eyes and a cruel smile, a muscular body and nerves of steel. He has a tendency toward laziness, when given the opportunity, but he's athletic and healthy.
He has gone through several identities. Throughout the operation he's working with Toorop, he goes, officially, by 'Frank Baxter', though Dowie is forever called "Dowie".
Dowie comes into the game Hearts and Minds at his death, about halfway through the novel. He is infected by Marie Zorn's "virus", and, consequently, goes mad. It is his madness, and that of one of his partner's (Rebecca Waterman) that causes both of their deaths.
Dowie is a character from the novel Babylon Babies (the novel which the Vin Deisel movie, Babylon AD was based on) and is not my creation. He is a fictional character, and I have no affiliation with the novel, with Owen O'Neill, or the UVF.
